The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Grid Modernization Initiative was launched in early 2016 with a series of six regional workshops. These workshops were designed to solicit stakeholder input on DOE’s grid-related research and demonstration (R&D) strategy and the grid-related technical challenges of regional and national policy initiatives.
Stakeholder feedback from these initial workshops is shaping DOE's Grid Modernization Multi-Year Program Plan and the R&D work of the National Laboratories. However, in order for the labs' R&D efforts to be the most effective and useful, continued collaboration with stakeholders from all sectors is vital.
To be part of this continued collaboration, we invite you to join us for workshops related to the Devices and Integrated Systems technical area on September 13 & 14, 2016, at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Energy Systems Integration Facility in Golden, Colorado.
Please note: space for these workshops is limited; register early to secure your spot. To ensure a broad representation, there is a limit of two attendees per organization.
Workshop Overviews
Testing and Standards for Grid Services from Devices | Tuesday, September 13, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This project is developing a Recommended Practice for testing distributed energy resource (DER) devices’ ability to provide a variety of existing and new grid services. It will consist of simple, short characterization test procedures that measure a device’s response, definitions of grid services in the form of standard “drive cycles,” and value-based metrics that describe a device’s performance overall and for each service. The intent is to drive increased sales by informing consumers and utilities, resulting in fleets of devices with known, proven performance characteristics. Draft agenda
Testing Network and Open Library | Wednesday, September 14, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
GMLC plans to establish a Testing Network (GMLC-TN) and an Open Library (GMLC-OL) to improve access to grid devices and systems testing and modeling resources at national labs and beyond. These efforts seek to accelerate development, validation, standardization, adoption, and deployment of new grid technologies. The workshop will formally introduce the GMLC-TN and GMLC-OL initiatives, discuss project goals and proposed enabling frameworks, and solicit guidance on how to maximize value to all stakeholders.
Interconnection and Interoperability Gap Analysis | Wednesday, September 14, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
This workshop will present the results of a Standards and Test Procedures for Interconnection and Interoperability Gap Analysis. The analysis will focus on a preliminary identification of all interconnection and interoperability standards and test procedures, identifying points of commonality and conflict. This includes examining distributed generation, storage and dispatchable load. The analysis will also offer recommendations for how to consolidate or make equivalent interconnection and interoperability standards across all technologies, and how to harmonize requirements across jurisdictions. Participants will be asked to give feedback on the analysis and help determine priorities for next steps in addressing identified gaps.
You are welcome to register for one or all three workshops.
